This is the French hydrangea. It blooms on last year’s wood. The problem is that in our climate (zone 5), the tops always freeze off and so do the blooms and all you get is green shoots from the bottom and no nice pink blue white or red flowers. So this year I wrapped them in burlap to keep the harsh winter winds off and prevent the burning of the flower buds. I will keep you posted on how it works this spring.
This hydrangea is classified as hardiness zone 5 but it will not bloom unless you get the newer varieties that bloom on the new growth.
