looking for spring: The new front yard

Writer's picture: Louisette and PeterLouisette and Peter

It is nice to dream about spring in the middle of winter. In the fall I started the front yard it is a no dig English stile garden. So all I did was level the front yard and then put on a 4” layer of compost on it, in the shape of the borders that I wanted to plant. The rest I will seed with grass next spring.

Then I put out the shrubs. Rhododendrons and Azaleas near the house. They like the shade. The other flowering and evergreen shrubs elsewhere to give the garden height and interest all year long. The spaces that were left are filled with perennials, for color from spring to fall.
