In the winter here in New Brunswick (zone 5) these shrubs have a hard time when it gets cold. They really don't like -20C and a lot of wind. I also think when the roots are frozen they cannot get the water, but the leaves are still evaporating so the plant dries out. With the burlap around the wind cannot do any damage and the plant goes through the winter a lot easier
