So much goodness on this beautiful morning

Writer's picture: Louisette and PeterLouisette and Peter

It was so peaceful in the garden this morning. Louisette and I are truly blessed that we can live in this paradise. The abundance of vegetables ready for harvest. The insects doing their jobs to keep everything healthy and pollinated. The birds singing all around.

With all of this biodiversity, we don’t seem to have any pests around. I make sure all dead leaf material is picked up so no slug food around. We do have some holes in the leaves but nothing that worries me. I should spray with the bacillus, a biologic spray that gives any caterpillar indigestion, against the cabbage looper but I see very few white butterflies. As long as there is no problem I will not use it so as to not to disturb the balance I have in the garden. Every insect has its place so let’s not kill them just in case.

We have new pants to be planted for harvest deep into the fall so when anything gets harvested I am planting the empty spot immediately. Open ground should be avoided. Something has to grow so the microbial life, that is such an important part of a healthy garden, is being fed and kept alive. I will be planting in between the corn that is almost ready so the plants can establish and take off as soon as the corn gets harvested.

Come to the garden tour tomorrow morning and I will explain how our garden works. On the 15 of august in the afternoon we will have a workshop on making a cold frame and extending our season for fresh vegetable in to December.
